New Orleans vs Mumbai

I couldn't' stop making this comparison..

inches of rain in New Orleans due to hurricane Katrina... 18
inches of rain in Mumbai (July 27th).... 37.1

population of New Orleans... 484,674
population of Mumbai.... 12,622,500

deaths in New Orleans within 48 hours of Katrina...100
deaths in Mumbai within 48hours of rain.. 37.

number of people to be evacuated in New Orleans... entire city..wohh
number of people evacuated in Mumbai...10,000

cases of shooting and violence in New Orleans...Countless
cases of shooting and violence in Mumbai.. NONE

time taken for US army to reach New Orleans... 48 hours
time taken for Indian army and navy to reach Mumbai...12 hours

status 48 hours later...New Orleans is still waiting for relief, army and electricty
status 48 hours later..Mumbai is back on its feet and is business is as usual

USA...world's most developed nation
India...JUST A DEVELOPING NATION..

oops...did i get the last fact wrong??? Or am I just being proud of being an INDIAN?

A couple of small points we need to note:
#. The difference between rainfall and a tornado
#. The difference between a city above/at sea level and a city below sea level.
#. The difference between the people of a city at the swords edge every day (Mumbai), and the people of one of the most easy-going cities of America (The Big Easy - New Orleans)!

On first glance, it seems pretty good though. Very smug :)

A Perfect Oxymoron of the Developed and Developing Nations. Indeed a very good article that paints a rosy picture of Mumbai against New Orleans for a tragedy never expected.

whatever the comparison, it still is evident for everyone to see that americans live in very flimsy houses and cry themselves hoarse at other peoples problems but they cant seem to keep their house in order.....sdb

In mumbai it was just a heavy rain fall which continued for a prolonged period that had been witnessed after 3 decades. Still mumbai suffered so much that army and stuff had to be there for relief. Tornado is a complete different thing 10 times more dangerous than prolonged rainfall. So if the same tornado would have been in mumbai, mumbai would not have been existing now. Imagine what tsunami caused to India. So America and India cannot be compared since India and America are best in it's own ways whether a developing nation or not I would still be proud of being an Indian

hi
Ya its true but still lot of improvement is required. Though I am proud to be an indian and its written on my bike also "Proudly Indian". I still wanna add from my side not agreed about the comparision about the disaster and its frequency of occurence is it? 100 mein se 90(80 previously now its increased phir bhi mera bharat mahan. What exactly happens at ground level I mean to say what exactly happens at grass root level is more important than the this kind of comparision... Mitesh Popat
